Kurmak Builders - Custom Renovations

This is the 3rd renovation we have done with Kurmak Builders and Susan Kennedy (Kennedy Design Group) and we were not disappointed. We decided to redo the finished basement. It originally was an awkward open space, which we completely redesigned. We redid a bathroom, changed a bedroom to a workout room with a murphy bed, added a theatre room and an office. We also removed an exterior door and replaced a picture window with French doors out to our garden, where we added an outdoor gas heater. Everything was done to Kurmak’s usual high standards. The basement is much more functional and has not lost the airy feel. The theatre (done with Adera Technologies) is amazing and has been used extensively since the COVID-19 outbreak. If you want a renovation done right, call Frank at Kurmak. You will not be disappointed. (2020) We had our master bathroom completely redesigned; a window taken out, closet door location moved, shower moved etc. The original space was not very efficient or large. My husband is very particular about details and Frank and Kyle always listened and dealt with our concerns. At one point the granite was installed improperly in the shower and Frank took one look at it and said it would be redone. It was done the next day. If Kyle said that a contractor would be there, the contractor would always be there within the time frame, unless something unforeseen happened. But we were always informed. Susan had great ideas for the redesign that made the small space very efficient and beautiful. Wow, is the usual response when people see it. We were so happy with the renovation we are now tackling the kitchen, main bathroom, and laundry room. We look forward to seeing this next stage completed. Kurmak was a pleasure to work with from initial meeting to final delivery. Lisa took the time to get to know us and our design preferences. Frank and his team took the time to answer our questions and quickly resolved the issues that arose along the way. Me and my wife decided to renovate the whole first floor of our very old bungalow, but had no idea how to start it. We then googled a few builders in Calgary with good reviews and building certifications. We ended up down selecting 3 builders to compare. Me and my wife then defined all criteria, like price, capabilities, knowledge, flexibility, commitment and a few others. Kurmak was selected at this point and a high expectation from our side had just built up. Scope was defined and agreed, list of main materials was set, main concerns were raised and documented, team was presented and the schedule was built. Our bungalow is from the 60's and asbestos were tested everywhere. This was one of our biggest concerns since we planned to live in the basement meanwhile the whole first floor was renovated, but that could only happen after asbestos abatement have been done. Besides asbestos, we had structural changes (beams flushed, posts taken out, ceiling flatted, walls moved and a whole lot of other changes in framing, flooring, plumbing, tiling, wiring, etc., etc. The project was totally completed on time, on full and on budget (according to some scope changes we requested during the execution). The overall experience was absolutely awesome. Frank definitely played a key role to its complete success. His deep knowledge in this type of project, the quality and professionalism brought by him, his team and contractors, the care with the smallest details, the inputs and ideas for getting better results and the respect and care with our family, as we were living in the basement, were memorable. No question that we had our (high) expectations very met at conclusion. We do recommend and will consider Frank and Kurmak on any building or renovation project on the horizon.

We recently finished renovations with Kurmak Builders, doing a complete overhaul of the kitchen and family room and we could not be more pleased with the results. Kurmak also had Buildertrend, a website that allowed us to always see how everything was going and kept track of all the moving parts, so we always felt 100% involved in the process. The Kurmak team’s attention to detail and professionalism on the project lead to amazing results and gave us exactly what we were looking for. We would highly recommend Frank and the Kurmak team for anyone considering a home renovation.

Kurmak developed my basement and exceeded my expectations (I have high expectations). The process was much more pleasant then my experience with other contractors with the end product being exceptional. Allow me to highlight but a small sample of the differences I experienced between Kurmak and others who I worked with in the past: 1) They billed their standard as a ‘mid tier’. I found that as we went through selections I never had to ‘upgrade’ the selection to obtain a great product: from the stone counters, to the cabinetry to the flooring – there was not one higher priced change that happened. I was surprised given that my previous experience was that the ‘initial’ sticker price always escalated, particularly with selections. The budget that was agreed, was the budget that was obtained. 2) I never had to point out a flaw in workmanship. Initially, I would go to the basement daily and provide a list of items that were flawed. Every time I did, it turns out they had already taken steps to address and informed me of all the other items they identified. This was the first time I have not needed to fret over flaws – every one I noticed was always remedied (without me having to mention). Their eye for detail is top tier. 3) The engagement of the in-house designer was a game changer. Although my better half has an eye for design, we both agree that the expertise that was provided significantly contributed to a build that is now the envy of anyone who visits. Every colour, every detail simply hangs together seamlessly. In a nutshell perhaps what says it all, if I am to do any upgrades or remodels there is only one company that I will do this with – Kurmak.
